Volunteers are the backbone of every community across the country.
Without them many of the events, organizations, etc. would simply not exist.
The Municipality of Crowsnest Pass recognizes the importance of its volunteers and honours them each year at a special event during Volunteer Week.
The event is an opportunity for volunteers to gather, socialize have a bite to eat and receive some much-deserved appreciation for the work that they do throughout the year.
This should be a social event, an opportunity to relax and give thanks, however it seems instead it was used as a forum to gather support for the Crowsnest Centre, much to the shock of some in attendance.
While in a democracy, taking on city hall is expected and even encouraged, there is an appropriate time and place for these endeavours.
Using a captive audience, gathered together to be recognized for their dedication and hard work, to muster support for a cause detracted from the spirit of cooperation and thanksgiving of the event.
It’s like our mothers always told us, religion and politics are two topics that should never be discussed in polite company.
