Council unanimously approved a three-year lease for Lethbridge College to occupy space at the M.D. McEachern Community Centre in Bellevue.
The lease consists of 4,340 square feet on the second floor made up of six classrooms and one office and administration area.
The three-year term is based on price per square foot and begins on Aug. 1. Rent in the first year is $24,039, the second year it increases to $24,744, and in the third year it costs $25,452. These fees do not include GST.
In addition, the college must pay the municipality the sum of $10,000 "to offset the cost of installing the data and phone distribution system and the required mechanical infrastructure".
Significant upgrades were required to the current space as well as renovations.
All utility costs will be the responsibility of the municipality.
The lease of MDM will allow Lethbridge College to offer adult education and upgrading programs to the community. They have also agreed to share space and resources with Crowsnest Pass Adult Education and Crowsnest Pass Adult Literacy.
Up until now, Lethbridge College operated out of the Crowsnest Centre but was told to move along with other tenants when council closed the building.
The issue of transportation has been raised and the municipality is in discussions with the college to accommodate the needs of the student population.
MDM will be open seven days a week from 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.
