Breaking up is hard to do!
Except not in Celebrityland, where there's nothing like a public donnybrook, complete with accusations of infidelity, impropriety, insolvency or idiocy, to land your sorry ass on the front page of everything.
Don't be fooled by the pious pleas for "privacy at this difficult time." A relationship meltdown creates publicity, and publicity fuels careers, and if it didn't you wouldn't be invited on a daily basis to examine the dandruff and dust bunnies of the rich and famous.
Anyone who thinks these personal matters can't be dealt with under the radar should look to Jessica Lange and Sam Shephard, who managed to separate two years ago with no one the wiser. People magazine announced their split recently and huffily accused the couple of being "notoriously private." How dare they!
Let's hope it's a trend.
Here are some of the love matches that went kablooey in 2011:
Russell Crowe and his wife Danielle Spencer have separated, according to Australian news reports.
The Oscar winner and singer Spencer wed in 2003 and have two sons, Charles, eight, and Tennyson, six.
The Sydney Morning Herald reports the split is amicable.
The couple first met 22 years ago on the set of the movie The Crossing.
Crowe, 48, is currently filming ‘Noah’ in the U.S. while Spencer is at home in Sydney with the couple's boys.
As rumours of the split surfaced late on Saturday, Crowe was co-hosting The Indoor Garden Party with pal Alan Doyle at the Gramercy Theatre in New York.
The Gladiator star, who is a frequent Twitter user, has yet to comment on the break-up stories - his last posts focused on Saturday night's music and comedy concert and his cycling and work-out regimen.
Hours before news of the split leaked, he wrote, "yesterday 11.6km bike ride to work, 30 mins (minutes) yoga, light weights today so far 14.5 km stat bike, 20 mins light weights."
