Trustees by acclamation 0
Like most Canadian school boards, Livingstone Range School Division has exercised significant reductions in services over the past few years.
Most notably for parents in Crowsnest Pass were the changes to the board's transportation policies.
Busing has been reduced to a oneroute system that picks up and takes all students together and is only for those living 2.4 km. or more from their school.
These changes have had a drastic impact on parents in the area and a large number were understandably frustrated and disappointed with LRSD's unbending will to see them through.
So it was surprising when this week, only two candidates came forward for the two seats on the board representing the Pass. As such, they are automatically acclaimed and no election is necessary.
The question is why?
Why were the voices of those who opposed the busing changes so silent when it came time to stand up for a seat at the table?
Is it apathy? Resignation to policies perceived as unflinching? Or merely an unwillingness to fight an uphill battle against a stronger opponent?
No doubt the reasons are as varied as the individuals who may have considered the challenge. Perhaps it's as simple as not having the time to adequately devote to the job.
It is however, unfortunate, that voters are denied choice; that there will not be debate and discussion of the issues affecting education in the community.
Congratulations to the two candidates who have stepped up to run for trustee. We hope that your voices will speak on behalf of the taxpayers of Crowsnest Pass even though they didn't get the opportunity to vote for you.
